Ranging from dreary lo-fi folk to off-kilter dance kuts circling back to playful and absurd cut-up collage style experiments, one thing is certain, gnat has invented an intimate yet expansive sonic world of her own. Her compositions sound as if Daniel Johnson was sacrificed to the devil and his restless soul leaped from his body and took on a more twisted electro-femme incarnate who revels in poetic "audiovascular purgings" on Halloween each year. Dream Disk Lab is pleased to co-present her 5th offering, 'mother of forty legs', most of which was recorded and composed on her iPhone over the span of 2018 in an unsettling world. It is an audio-diary of incredibly honest and striking personal reflections on this world, often with hints of dark humor and references to an ever-changing and fragile mental state of her alternate personality. The opening track 'safety' is a gorgeous ambient offering that begins in a comforting and somber tone eventually turning inward on itself inciting the listener to question if one is ever truly safe. Similarly the melancholic drone of 'don't worry about me' is both soothing and a reminder of that we ultimately lack control in the face of inevitable and sustained tragedies. Though intimate and personal gnat has a few notable and clandestine features on this record as well, among them the beautifully performed 'safekeeping' with xav, as well as a more outlandish 'get it from the trees' featuring flight risk, who also mastered the record. Gnat's 'the mother of forty legs' is certainly a creature who crawls in many directions while multitasking, delivering a sonic experience like no other, hugging you and digging its claws into your flesh at all at once.
